ASIA-PACIFIC SATELLITE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE APSAT 2009 The Asia-Pacific Satellite Industry in the ICT Era, Broadband, Multimedia and Personal Services to address Accessibility, Disaster Recovery and Capacity Development. The satellite technology keeps advancing along with the development of the ICT technology, particularly on the ground segment and application aspects. The satellite services and applications are blending and converging of diverse needs from different requirement. Though terrestrial networks such as Fiber Optic and Broadband Wireless services are in full proliferation, but satellite services are still considered a very important necessity to support the economic, the accessibility and the human capacity development in the Asia-Pacific region.
Asia-Pacific region is a wide and diverse region, composed of many countries, cultures, languages, traditions, social structures and political systems, yet it is also the world most dynamic region in the economic development of the 21st century and some years to come. Asia-Pacific region is also known for lack of telecommunication accessibility, lack of human capacity development, especially in education and health care, as well as it is a region that harbored many potential natural disasters and quiet often being hampered by many serious natural disasters. This blended situation requires the present of the satellite services and applications to address such problems, in particular, the corporate service, the basic telecommunication infrastructure, the rural communications, the disaster anticipation and recovery as well as the satellite specific services (e.g. remote sensing, navigation etc.). In the corporate service sector, demand for more satellite in orbit and transponders are still considerably high, due to the growth of the ICT demand, such situations are enjoyed by most satellite service providers in this region. Some of the key driving factors are the corporate demand, the cellular operator demand, for the expansion of their coverage, the broadcaster demand, for TV and Direct to Home service, and the Internet Service Provider; with the coverage from national to regional and even global. In addition to that, the triple play business has just started and 3G is now widely available which make satellite services are not only to just deliver data (asinfrastructure) but they also support VSAT service to provide triple play and going to be “quardraplay”. These facts are evolving and eminent, which in return, drive the idea to create a forum for sharing and promote vision, strategy and opportunity to wider audience, so that the final result will certainly, not only be useful, but further may accelerate the satellite industry development, in Asia-Pacific region as well as in the world. It is in this vicinity that the APSAT2009 international conference program is initiated to discuss and analyze: the opportunities & challenges of the satellite industry, the position of satellite market and functionality in the Asia-Pacific region, and the trend as well as strategy to deliver the satellite communication services for addressing various demand in the region. The theme for the APSAT 2009 is “The Asia-Pacific Satellite Industry in the ICT Era”; it will still focus on the “Broadband, Multimedia and Personal Services to address Accessibility, Disaster Recovery and Capacity Development”. The APSAT2009 is the 8th ASSI’ annual international conference series on the satellite communication aspect. This conference is a remarkable annual event in Indonesia and it is being acknowledged, recognized and endorsed by telecommunication international societies, professionals and government institutions. In addition to that, ASSI (Asosiasi Satelit Indonesia) or (the Indonesian Satellite Association) is an inclusive non-profit organization, based in Bandung, established in 1998, to promote and encourage the satellite industry, including the satellite community development in Indonesia, through national-international multi discipline collaboration; and to address wide range satellite related issues.
